One of the most famous battles that took place in this country was the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the battle with the largest number of people that was killed in the American Civil War and is also known as the turning point of the war.

The South was led by General Robert E. Lee and the North was led by Major General George Gordon Meade. The Battle consisted of 85,000 Union men and 75,000 Confederates, which was the largest battle to ever be fought on the continent of North America. 52,000 people died in this battle not including how many were injured or went missing. This battle took away 1/3 of General Lee’s army which would severely hurt the confederates later on down the road.
