One of the most famous battles that took place in this country was the Battle of Gettysburg.  The battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the battle with the largest number of people that was killed in the American Civil War and is also known as the turning point of the war.

The South was led by General Robert E. Lee and the North was led by Major General George Gordon Meade.  The Battle consisted of 85,000 Union men and 75,000 Confederates, which was the largest battle to ever be fought on the continent of North America. 52,000 people died in this battle not including how many were injured or went missing. This battle took away 1/3 of General Lee’s army which would severely hurt the confederates later on down the road.

Since General Lee had lost 1/3 third of his army, this battle was marked the turning point of the war. Gettysburg was a significant factor in the Civil War and as well as the development of this country.  All though the conflict did last for two more years this battle will always be remembered as the turning point in a war that helped develop this country as a whole.

On September 17, 1862 general Robert E. Lee and George McClellan faced off near Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Antietam Battle was the first battle of the American civil war to be fought on northern soil. General Robert E. Lee sent half of his men under the command of General Thomas Jackson to capture the union garrison at Harper's Ferry (Battle of Antietam).

The Battle of Antietam had over 131,000 forces engaged, 87,000 were for the union, and 45,000 were for the confederates. There were about 22,717 casualties during the three day span of the battle. The commander, who led the union General George B. McClellan, noticed that the union had a very large numerical advantage. This did not stop the confederates from holding their grounds. The battle forced the confederate army to retreat back across the Potomac River. Although the battle was considered a draw, the union claimed victory.

The Battle of Antietam was known as the bloodiest battle in American history (Civil War Trust). At the end of the battle 2,108 union soldiers was confirmed dead and 10293 were stated missing. Almost twice as many people died at Sharpsburg, Maryland than the War of 1812 and the Mexican War combined. This victory was what Abraham needed in order to issue the Emancipation Proclamation which would change the world forever.

Battle of Vicksburg

                  The battle of Vicksburg is not well know. It is not one of the big battles of the civil war. However it is still important to the war. The battle took place in Vicksburg Mississippi.  President Abraham Lincoln thought that Vicksburg  would be every important. He thought this because it was very close to the Vicksburg River. Lincoln believed that it was only to be a key place in the war. There was more then one attempted to capture Vicksburg. the battle stared May 18, 1863. 

                  The Battle of Vicksburg was a draw out attack by the Union naval vessels, bombing near by towns. The ships were all over the coast line. On May 19, Grant ordered Sherman's men to attack along the grave yard road northeast of town. The attack of Sherman's men resulted in nearly 1,800 union casualties and the Confederates only lost about 200. On April 16 David Dixon Porter went down the Mississippi running threw the guns firing from Vicksburg Bluff.

                  The battle of Vicksburg is not well know. However it was very important to the out come in the war. The battle was won by the Union forces.  The battle ended July forth 1863.  This was a big win for the Union . The area was so close to the Mississippi that they now could control ships coming there.  During the battle the Confederate  army had 2,900 men that were missing wounded or killed in the 48 days of the battle.

The Battle of Atlanta:

                One of the bloodiest battles was fought on July 22nd, 1864. It was fought in East Atlanta. The battle lasted for eight hours of continuous fighting. The commander of the Atlanta battle was Maj. William T. Sherman and Gen. John Bell Hood.
            There were 34,000 soldiers engaged in the Union and 40,000 from the Confederates.  William T. Sherman burned most of the buildings in the city after finding out the city was abandoned. This is what started Sherman's march to the sea. The battle had a great strategy and military significance. It also had a big impact on the political aspect. The Union's had 3,000 causalities whereas the Confederate had 8,500.
            The Battle of Atlanta was important to both sides to win. It was one of the bloodiest battle and lasted for a long time. Many people died but at the end of the battle, the Union successfully won.

The Battle of Bull Run

The Battle of Bull Run was one of the most essential and influential battles of the Civil War. Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War. The battle was less than 12 hours long, but with nearly 5,000 casualties, it seemed like it lasted forever.

Commander of the Union army, General Irvin McDowell planned to attack the Confederacy. The Confederacy was commanded by Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard. “The goal was to make quick work of the bulk of the Confederate army, open the way to Richmond, the confederate capital, and end the war.” (Bull Run) “McDowell’s forces began by shelling the Confederates across Bull Run”. (Bull Run) Small detachments were sent to handle a distraction.

July 21, 1861, Union vs. Confederate. They fought near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The Union had 35,000 soldiers and the Confederacy had 20,000 soldiers. The Confederacy won, forcing the Union to retreat towards Washington. This gave the South a surge of confidence. It also shocked the North making them realize the war was not going to be easy

The Battle of Fort Sumter

The battle of Fort Sumter was the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter, near Charlston, South Carolina, that started the American Civil War, The whole battle lasted from April 12th, 1861- April 14th, 1861.

During the seccession crisis after President Lincolns election in November 1860, South carolina demanded that the United States Army abandon its facilities in Charleston.

The whole battle lasted for only 34 hours. Anderson didnt return fire immediently. He waited another two hours to give defending fire. Amazingly, no one was killed in the battle that took place. On April 13th, Anderson surrenders to the South. The South would allow him to do a salute before they had to leave the fort.

When anderson surrendered, the terms allowed Anderson to preform a salute. This was going to be a 100 gun salute, and begain at 2 p.m. but was cut short when an accidental explosion killed one man and injured another. The men then marched to board a ship that took them to union ships on the harbor. Upon their return, the men were greeted with a hero's welcome.

Students completed a Halloween project where they picked a significant person in American history to research.  They were required to write a paper, create and visual and dress up as their person on Halloween (the due date of the project).  Below is a picture of 2nd block students dressed up as their characters! The winning costume for this class was Alison Hurayt as Amelia Earhart.
