Battle of Vicksburg
The battle of Vicksburg is not well know. It is not one of the big battles of the civil war. However it is still important to the war. The battle took place in Vicksburg Mississippi. President Abraham Lincoln thought that Vicksburg would be every important. He thought this because it was very close to the Vicksburg River. Lincoln believed that it was only to be a key place in the war. There was more then one attempted to capture Vicksburg. the battle stared May 18, 1863.
The Battle of Vicksburg was a draw out attack by the Union naval vessels, bombing near by towns. The ships were all over the coast line. On May 19, Grant ordered Sherman's men to attack along the grave yard road northeast of town. The attack of Sherman's men resulted in nearly 1,800 union casualties and the Confederates only lost about 200. On April 16 David Dixon Porter went down the Mississippi running threw the guns firing from Vicksburg Bluff.
The battle of Vicksburg is not well know. However it was very important to the out come in the war. The battle was won by the Union forces. The battle ended July forth 1863. This was a big win for the Union . The area was so close to the Mississippi that they now could control ships coming there. During the battle the Confederate army had 2,900 men that were missing wounded or killed in the 48 days of the battle.
